Cape Town, South Africa ~ Grand Daddy Hotel's Air Stream Rooftop Penthouse

Posted by uud on 12:01 AM
So have I caught your attention with my polk a dots?
This is actually the inside of an Air stream on the rooftop
of a hotel in Cape Town, South Africa.

Let's get another look at those polk a dots!

This historic and conservative looking building is The
Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town. It's actually an
"Art" hotel where all of the rooms are modern and
wacky.

The suprise? A penthouse air stream
trailer lot on the roof of the hotel.

One might wonder how they got the Air Streams
up there... I think this photo will suffice - by
cranes.

Up and close.

The roof top comes complete with a communal area
that has a small bar and cooking grill for a BBQ.

Gorgeous spot isn't it?

They did a fantastic job of landscaping the roof.

You may be wondering if all of the Air Streams look like
polk-a-dots exploded in them. They all have different
themes and decor.

This one has a retro feel to it.

This one was inspired by John Lennon and Yoko Onno.

Another retro design, but tastefully done.

The same trailer from another angle.

Have no fear girls! Have we got a PINK air stream trailer
for you! Perfect for gal pals. Time to whip out those sexy
silk and satin jammies that the boys always think us girls
lounge around in those glamorous looking slumber parties
that are portrayed in the movies :)

It IS fun though.

Feels like a girly Parisian boudoir.

Well, there's something edgier for the bachelors too.

Complete with a cool looking jellyfish
theme for the bed area.

Feels like a cozy cave - I love that the walls are dark.

This last one is a hoot! Remember the
nursery story of the Three Bears?

Well here it is complete with 3 beds for you to try.

Super cute! Complete with different
sized chairs and different sized bowls.

You can find more information at Grand Daddy
Hotel's website
. Rooms start from $120 USD
per night.

Would you stay there for a night? I would
totally do it. Looks like a lot of fun - something
unique.

I can't tell which tattoo is worse! Is it this unicorn with a broken/ jello neck?

... or these little scratchy buddies? They are both so bad!

White Living Rooms

Posted by uud on 12:10 AM
When you think about it, white would seem like a boring
color to have as a background color. Track homes and
new homes always come standard with white walls. But
using textures, shapes and accent colors - white can be a
wonderful color to be the base of your design.

This post focuses on living rooms that have White
as a background or the main color of the room.
There's something to be said for a monochromatic
color scheme. By using different shades of the same
color, a monochromatic room can be quite dramatic.

Who doesn't like a little zebra in their living room?

Otherwise, one can never ever go
wrong with black and white.

Using plastic or lucite pieces with white also
works quite well since it is devoid of color.

This is a more neutral room with beiges,
greys and a little bit of red accent color.

Having white as a background is a great way to throw in
colorful accessories. Tired of the color? Just swap in
new pillows, drapes or accent pieces.

With everything white except for the sofa,
the green sofa really pops in the room.

Silver or grey is also a wonderful
neutral color to pair with white.

I thought this was such an interesting living room.
It has rococo features on the ceiling with a decidedly
rustic looking chandelier. It totally works though.

At Home with White

If you love white in your home, Atlanta
Bartlett has a great book called "At Home
With White"
that you should check out.

Coco Avant Chanel

Posted by uud on 12:10 AM

I watched a wonderful movie last week about Chanel's
life before her fame and fortune. I really enjoyed it.
The movie gave some insight into the early years of
Chanel's life and really hits home just how far ahead of
her time she was when it came to fashion, comfort and
easy elegance. She, was a very elegant woman.

Audrey Tautou (from the movie
Amelie) plays young Chanel.

Here's a side by side photo of Chanel and Audrey Tautou.

Some stills from the movie. Can you imagine how eccentric
people thought she was for wearing mean's clothing? You
must remember that Gabrielle Chanel was born in 1883
and became 21 years of age around the turn of the century.
Women back then did not simply strut around in men's
clothes.

Alessandro Nivola plays the love of her life who was Arthur "Boy" Capel.
Both "Boy" and Chanel had other lovers as well but Boy seemed to be the
one that Chanel loved most. Boy also financed her first shop in Paris and
she borrowed greatly from his closet for inspiration. Since 99% of the
movie is in French, Alessandro had to learn French for the movie.
Alessandro is an American actor who was born in Boston. He is very
dashing and appropriately intense in the movie.

Coco Chanel with Cecil Beaton in 1937.

This was the only real picture of Arthur "Boy" Capel
that I could find. He was an English Polo player who
was also a politician and self made businessman.

I really love this image from the movie as it
depicts Chanel so elegantly in her workspace.

This is a very old photograph of a very young Coco.

Chanel always had this way of mixing masculine
and feminine style together effortlessly.

All of her portraits are just stunning. Not in the flat out
sexy feel that Marilyn Monroe had but a true kind of
elegance, chic and just plain coolness.

Back then, it was chic to smoke and Chanel definitely
smoked A Lot. Many of her famous portraits and
photos show her with a cigarette hanging out of her
mouth - even while working and pinning models.
Now that I think about, I don't see many photos of
her without a cigarette in hand.

I love this portrait of Coco. It's a very unique angle that
shows off her profile. It was either a popular angle back
then or Chanel just really knew how to pose. I think Chanel
really knew how to pose...I'm not sure I've seen a bad photo
of her.Another photo of young Chanel.

This one with short wavy hair. She cut her hair at
a time when short hair wasn't fashionable. During
the 1930's, you had the "flappers" era of daring and
forward women who bobbed their hair and wore
short skirts. Chanel cut her hair before it had come
into fashion.

Chanel with a straw hat - straw hats that
she brought into fashion for women.

Love the netting. She crossed her arms a lot -
like a man. I don't imagine it was considered
feminine for women to do it back then.

What a cool looking pose. She's like the epitome
of cool. The female version of James Dean.

I love this candid photo of her. She just always
looked so relaxed - very much so in her own skin.

I think this this book is one of the best books about
Chanel as it combines her life story with beautiful
photographs of her, her life and and her work. It's
a bit pricey but well worth it if you're looking for an
informative and beautiful book about Chanel.

In the past, I've blogged about Coco Chanel's apartment
above her flagship store and her suite at the Ritz in Paris.
Check them out if you're interested.
